A Wired article citing several studies says eating more proteins for breakfast gives you more energy and that carbohydrates for breakfast, particularly sugars, actually make you more tired. Almonds are mentioned three times, and the Zone diet is mentioned once, which recommends 30% of your calories come from protein but not from any particular source. The Zone diet is also very compatible with vegetarian and vegan diets through the use of more soy proteins (or lots of almonds I guess).
The article does not mention any animal proteins, either specifically or generally.
